Zambia has formally requested a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, with a team from the multilateral lender expected to visit from February 25 to March 4, the country's treasury secretary told Reuters on Wednesday.
If talks go smoothly, the Southern African nation expects to reach a staff-level agreement with the IMF in May, said Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa.
"After the staff-level agreement, we will then have to wait for the IMF board's approval and that will determine when actual implementation of the programme can begin," he added.
Zambia's most recent IMF programme ended in January, with total disbursements of $1.7-billion supporting the country as it emerges from a protracted debt-restructuring process.
Zambia will hold a national election in August, when President Hakainde Hichilema will seek re-election.
