The vibrant and complex ecosystem that is the WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (WWF-SASSI) underscores the collective responsibility of everyone involved in the seafood supply chain. By working together, we can conserve our oceans to safeguard the sustainability of marine resources for future generations. 

This report celebrates the past triumphs, highlights the present initiatives and has eyes on the future. The importance of retailers and suppliers coming together to shift the industry to make sustainably and responsibly sourced seafood the norm and standard, is needed now more than ever. 

South Africa’s seafood consumption has continued to grow, with figures rising from approximately 325 000 tonnes in 2022 to an estimated 350 000 tonnes in 2024. 

Each scheme participant is on their unique sustainable seafood journey, and all are committed to transforming the seafood market. WWF-SASSI is dedicated to a continuous partnership with these participants to help them fulfil their public seafood commitments.  

The report also provides insight into the 2024 WWF-SASSI consumer survey. The survey highlights the number of South Africans who now eat seafood and where they place responsibility to ensure it is sustainably sourced.
