The Vereeniging Road extension and bridge have finally been opened to the public after months of persistent advocacy by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
We are pleased to see this long-awaited development come to fruition. Originally scheduled for completion in March 2022, the road reached 92% completion by August of the previous year. However, due to the municipality's failure to make timely payments to subcontractors, the road remained closed, causing inconvenience to the residents of Mangaung.
It is disheartening that the incompetence of the ANC-led municipality has resulted in the residents of Mangaung bearing the cost of their failure to fulfil their commitments. The ongoing legal cases arising from the non-payment have led to additional financial burdens for the municipality.
The DA questioned why law-abiding, tax-paying residents should shoulder the consequences of the governing party's ineptitude. Nevertheless, we express cautious optimism and relief in observing that the Acting Executive Mayor, Gregory Nthatisi has demonstrated a departure from the nonchalant arrogance of his predecessor, Mxolisi Siyonzana. The Acting Mayor has responded to our call, as well as a petition with over 2,000 signatories, by taking action to open the road.
Furthermore, we urge the authorities to prioritize the repair of potholes on Memorium Road and Vereeniging Road, as the increased traffic flow resulting from the road's opening will significantly impact these routes. Additionally, we emphasize the urgent need to address the issue of illegal dumping, which has arisen due to the road closure.
We express concern regarding the proposed formal opening of the road in June, which we believe could result in unnecessary expenditures on catering and event expenses. We suggest redirecting these funds toward essential road markings and traffic signs at the old Vereeniging/Memorium Road intersection, where the current stop sign and markings are barely visible.
The DA remains committed to closely monitoring the situation and holding the governing party accountable on behalf of the residents of Mangaung. We will continue to advocate for the timely completion of essential infrastructure projects and the responsible allocation of public funds.
Issued by David Mc Kay - DA Ward Councillor Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality
