To cement the US’s view that African countries are geostrategic players and critical partners, US secretary of State Antony Blinken will launch the US strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa, when he visits South Africa on August 7.
The US hopes to firm up partnerships on climate change, food insecurity, pandemics health, infrastructure, trade and technologies.
He will travel between Pretoria and Johannesburg and will also participate in National Women’s Da on August 9.
Blinken will also be travelling to Cambodia, the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
He will meet with senior DRC government officials and members of civil society to discuss free, inclusive, and fair elections in 2023, corruption, trade and investment, agricultural resilience and peace.
He will also meet with senior Rwandan government officials and civil society members on August 10 and 11 to discuss shared priorities, including peacekeeping.
The Secretary will focus on the role Rwanda’s government can play in reducing tensions and ongoing violence in eastern DRC.
He will also raise democracy and human rights concerns, including transnational repression, limiting space for dissent and political opposition, and the wrongful detention of US Lawful Permanent Resident Paul Rusesabagina.
