- Unlocking growth through the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol: a focus on e-commerce in Cameroon1.02 MB
Digital trade is transforming global commerce, lowering transaction costs, connecting businesses across borders and expanding access to new markets. Yet, Africa's participation in this digital revolution remains disproportionately low.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade Protocol (DTP) offers a game-changing opportunity. By harmonising digital trade rules across Africa, the DTP promises to boost regional integration and unlock unprecedented economic growth. Cameroon, an early adopter of the AfCFTA and the DTP, is poised to be at the forefront of this digital transformation that could redefine its economic landscape.
Cameroon's digital economy, encompassing internet services, e-commerce and mobile money, is showing promising growth. However, challenges remain. Infrastructure gaps, restrictive regulations and a shortage of digital skills threaten to hold back the country's full potential compared to regional leaders like Kenya and South Africa.
This report examines the current state of Cameroon's digital trade ecosystem, analysing the regulatory landscape and identifying key barriers to growth. It also explores how the country can unlock the powerful potential of digital trade to drive inclusive economic growth, boost exports and create millions of jobs.
