The Unemployment Insurance Fund Board engaged with the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) Board and its training partners to oversee the more than R6 million leanership programme.
UIF Labour Activation Programme (LAP) wing and ELIDZ has signed an agreement for one year leanership programme to the value of R6 666 410.
ELIDZ is in partnership with Automotive Learning Academy (ALA) which is responsible for 60 leaners in the trade of Automotive Component Manufacturing and Assembly and the MSC Artisan Development Academy is responsible for 30 leaners in the trade of Electrical Engineering (Renewable Energy). The 90 leaners are made up of sixty percent women and ninety-five percent of the total are youth.
On 29 and 30 September 2021, the board visited three hosting companies to see the progress of the project. It was reported that four of the leaners secured permanent employment already and the remaining leaners will be absorbed at the end of the programme in March 2022.
The UIF Board member and Chairperson of the Labour Activation Programme committee, Thembinkosi Josopu, said the board is happy with the progress and satisfied with the process from induction to experiential learning. It is also exciting to know that four are already employed and the others will be absorbed at the end of the programme.
The Board received progress report from ELIDZ and went on to companies to observe leaners in action in the different workshops.
The UIF members who were conducting the oversight monitoring exercise on the LAP projects, were satisfied with what they have observed with respect to the progress made to date, albeit there is room for improvement.
