ActionSA applauds the Tshwane City Council for approving the long-overdue write-off of water bills in Hammanskraal, specifically in areas serviced by the Temba Water Treatment Plant. This decisive action directly impacts six key areas: Saruman, Majaneng, Mashemong, and Hammanskraal East and West. Residents in these communities have suffered from inflated and unjust water bills for years, despite receiving water that was unsafe for consumption.

The Council’s approval is a significant victory for residents who have endured years of hardship, paying for an essential resource that was neither reliable nor fit for use. ActionSA has consistently championed justice for Hammanskraal residents, repeatedly calling for the cancellation of these unfair debts, particularly under the previous administration, which failed to address this critical issue.

Water bills in Hammanskraal had accumulated to an alarming R1.1 billion, a reflection of years of systemic failure. The write-off of R600 million in debts is not just a financial resolution, but a moral victory that recognises the undue burden placed on residents who were billed for water they could not safely use.

ActionSA congratulates Executive Mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, and her administration for securing this long-overdue victory for the residents of Hammanskraal. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to justice and fairness for the community and urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and work collaboratively to ensure such injustices are never repeated.

ActionSA will continue to champion transparent, ethical governance and equitable treatment for all residents of Tshwane.

Issued by ActionSA Tshwane Caucus Spokesperson Tshepiso Modiba
