State-owned freight and logistics group Transnet has appointed an independent law firm to undertake an in-depth investigation into allegations that certain Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) managers flouted procurement processes.

The matter has also been referred to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which acknowledged receipt of the referral and will be proceeding with the investigation. Transnet says it welcomes the SIU's involvement and is cooperating fully with the process.

"Transnet has a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and malfeasance and views these allegations in a serious light. We wish to assure all stakeholders that Transnet will leave no stone unturned and will, at the appropriate time, take full disciplinary action against anyone involved in irregular conduct.

"Transnet is working tirelessly to restore the confidence of stakeholders in its operations, its finances and its governance framework," it says.

The matter is being treated with the urgency and seriousness it warrants. Further updates will be provided upon conclusion of the investigations.

Transnet has officially requested evidence to enable it to take appropriate action, but this has not been forthcoming.

"Should prima facie evidence become available during these investigations, Transnet will invoke the relevant processes in line with the company policies and laws of the country, and take the necessary disciplinary action," the agency says.
