DA Mafube Local Municipality councillor, Fako Tsotetsi, together with DA MPL, Mariette Pittaway, and DA member, Johannes Mphuthi, completed an oversight inspection of the wastewater treatment plant in Villiers.

The DA found the plant in a dismal state and it was evident that it is non-operational. There is no electricity at the plant due to stolen cables, which occurred more than six months ago and the municipality has made no attempt to repair it. There are also no chemicals available at the plant to treat the raw sewerage due to the municipality’s failure to provide any chemicals. As a result of no electricity, the water cannot be pumped and the untreated raw sewerage is spilling directly into the Vaal River.

DA councillors in the municipality will demand that council approves emergency funding to fix the treatment plant and will continue to monitor the issue.
