Lions are magnificent, beautiful, and under threat. Fifty years ago, they roamed most of Africa's savannas. In 1970, there were about 92 000 of them; today, there are closer to 23 000.
The Last Lions was written out of deep concern for their future - and with good reason. What was found was deeply worrying but also heartening.
