The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane rejects with disdain the racist utterances made by new ActionSA Councillor, Cllr Jacobus Coetzee. During an extra-ordinary meeting of Council, on 3 April 2025, Councillor Coetzee referred to the DA councillors as “baboons”.
The DA Caucus takes serious exception to the distasteful, derogatory and racist hate speech of this councillor. It goes against the values espoused in the Constitution and the Code of Conduct for Councillors.
The DA has requested the Speaker of Council to refer the matter to the Section 79 Standing Committee: Rules & Ethics. We will not stop there. Those utterances were a direct attack on the human dignity of DA councillors. We will be taking the matter to court and the Human Rights Commission.
We call on the leadership of ActionSA to deal decisively with the uncouth, unbecoming behaviour of their member. The DA will further lodge a dispute with the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to remove the councillor from office.
We cannot sit back and allow public representatives with this backward mindset to continue to hold office. It is not in the best interest of the public.
