- Tariff burden of women’s goods in trade0.31 MB
Did you know that the clothes you wear, the cosmetics you use and even essential hygiene products might be costing women more due to global trade policies?
This background note explores the often-overlooked intersection of trade and gender. While trade policies often appear neutral, this note reveals a compelling truth: they are far for it.
It exposes the “pink tariff” – a phenomenon where goods primarily consumed by women, ranging from apparel to essential personal care products, face stubbornly high tariffs. This note also introduces a new classification of “women's goods” to highlight how these tariffs add a hidden burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
