A petition against the proposed regulations in terms of the Employment Equity Amendment Act will be presented by Solidarity and the Cape Forum to the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces on Tuesday, 13 June.

According to both organisations, the regulations will have such a far-reaching impact on the country that a special parliamentary debate is essential. Such a debate as well as an opportunity to participate in this debate is requested in the petition.  In addition, strong emphasis is also placed on the irrational nature and unlawfulness of the regulations.

Several political parties will also receive the petition at the House of Parliament.

“When people’s jobs and the sustainability of their employment are at stake, it is only fair to acknowledge them in the matter. The government is steamrolling a one-sided process. It wants to implement draconian race regulations without creating sufficient opportunities for the South African citizenry to provide input or make themselves heard. With this petition, Solidarity and the Cape Forum are calling on the Speaker to act in the best interests of the country and its economy by opening a debate on this matter and by inviting stakeholders to participate so that the people impacted by this can be represented,” said Solidarity Chief Executive Dr Dirk Hermann.

Members of the media are hereby invited to attend the presentation of the petition.

Date: Tuesday, 13 Junie
