The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Ms Jane Mananiso, has welcomed the reduction in various categories of crime in South Africa and applauds the efforts by the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“The committee wants to commend the SAPS for the work done in ensuring a reduction in the crime statistics. We have especially closely looked at the reduction in statistics regarding gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF ). This is especially commendable as South Africa has been struggling this GBV for years; our women and children have not been safe,” said the Chairperson.

Ms Mananiso said South Africa saw a decrease in various categories of serious crimes, including sexual offences, murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder. She was reacting to the release of the Third Quarter Crime Statistics, which covers the period 1 October to 31 December 2024. This includes a 9.8% decrease in murder cases, 3.3% decrease in rape incidents and 3.2% decline in attempted sexual offences. “We want to commend SAPS seeing this period covers the festive season. Generally, criminality tends to increase over the festive season.

“Although we are happy with the decrease, many in South Africa still fall victim to crime. We therefore encourage the SAPS to further intensify its efforts to fight crime in order for the country to see a further decrease in crime in general, but especially these serious crimes,” the Chairperson said.

The Select Committee on Security and Justice together with the Portfolio Committee on Police will in April 2025 engage with the SAPS and members of the community on gangs and extortion in the Western Cape, with a view to finding solutions and rolling out this model of oversight to other provinces that are also hard hit by gangsterism and extortion.

“We would like to appreciate those pockets of society who understand that crime is a societal issue. By working together, we will see further reductions in crime and violence in our society to ensure that our citizens are able to live in safety,” said Ms Mananiso.
