On 28 August 2023, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality undertook a vital oversight visit to the lone vehicle bridge spanning the Sand River, situated just a few kilometres beyond Paul Roux, between Kaallaagte and Paul Roux town.

This bridge serves as a crucial artery connecting local farmers to the vital silos in Kaallaagte and Meats. However, the bridge's condition has deteriorated to an alarming extent, evident in the conspicuous cracks that mar the pillars supporting its structure. Our inspection revealed a significant shift of several centimetres at the junctures of these upright pillars. Adding to the concerns, the starting end of the bridge, near Paul Roux, has seen the road surface sink, resulting in a perilous protrusion on the already narrow bridge. Please see pictures here and here.

Regrettably, no cautionary signs have been erected to alert road users to the impending danger posed by this bump. We implore all motorists to exercise extreme care when traversing this bridge, as its hazardous state poses a significant risk. A comprehensive report detailing these hazards has been crafted and duly submitted to the Free State Provincial Department of Police Roads and Transport, urging prompt corrective action.

The soundness of our road infrastructure is integral to economic prosperity, growth, and the flourishing of tourism. In the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, the DA remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding road users' safety. We will vigilantly identify and report treacherous road conditions within the District to the pertinent provincial department. Together, we can ensure secure and thriving road networks that fuel our region's progress.
