Fifteen owners of emerging construction businesses have successfully completed accredited training on how to run their businesses more effectively. They will receive a certificate of competence from the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) in Stellenbosch on Thursday, 26 May 2016.

This Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) training course began in July 2015. The course has a modular design to enable participants to continue to actively manage their businesses for three weeks of the month. Each module lasts five days, and there are ten modules.

The programme is open to contractors who have a Level 2 Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) rating, and preference is given to CIDB-rated contractors who have registered construction businesses and who have been active in the industry for at least two years. The training components are: 1) enterprise development; 2) building the construction business; 3) applying innovative safety principles to the construction site; and 4) managing the construction site.

By offering training accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the Department of Transport and Public Works is helping to open doors for many owners of small construction businesses, both women and men. It is proud of taking effective action to facilitate skills development and promote the businesses of emerging building contractors in the province.

The Department’s Contractor Development Programme will continue to offer structured programmes that facilitate the development of emerging enterprises in the construction industry through skills and business enhancement initiatives. The next 10-month accredited training starts in July 2016.
