RISE Mzansi is deeply alarmed by several incidents of violent crime across the country. A spree of shootings and a stabbing resulting in the loss of young lives.

This afternoon, three people were shot – one fatally – just outside the Mithcells Plain South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town – this happened while the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner was addressing an imbizo just down the road. This follows a weekend of wanton gun violence in the City, where at least five people were left dead and another five injured.

Moreover, in Mpumalanga three men were fatally shot while traveling through Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga. While in Gauteng a 15-year-old learner was fatally stabbed in Toekomsrus.

It has also emerged that five bodies were found at an open cast mine in the Nort West.

RISE Mzansi once again reiterates its call for a clampdown on illegal firearms. The SAPS must increase its crime intelligence capacity to be able to identify these weapons and confiscate them systematically. It must also expand national firearms amnesties, including the use of an anonymous rewards system, for anonymous tip offs about illegal guns.

Furthermore, the prosecuting authorities must seek the harshest mandatory punishment for the possession and sale of illegal firearms.

These incidents confirm the urgent need for both Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee and the Judicial Commission of Inquiry setup to probe allegations of the capture and collapse of the criminal justice system.

These probes must result in the overhaul of the SAPS and other law enforcement bodies.

As part of my ongoing work to understand the needs and operations of everyday policing, tomorrow I will be conducting an oversight visit of both the Diepsloot and Douglasdale Police Stations.

RISE Mzansi wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the affected families and communities.

Issued by Makashule Gana MP, RISE Mzansi Assembly Whip
