We honour the life and legacy of Leon Levy, a towering figure in South Africa’s liberation struggle and author of Back to the Front, who passed away aged 96 on 2 February 2026.
From an early age, his political conscience was shaped by lived experiences of inequality, a passion for learning, and a deep commitment to justice that guided a lifetime of principled activism.
As a trade unionist, communist organiser, and full-time activist, Levy was deeply involved in struggles for workers’ rights, peace, and democratic ideals under severe repression.
His role as Accused No. 4 in the 1956 Treason Trial, and his presence at Kliptown during the adoption of the Freedom Charter, placed him at the heart of defining moments in South African history.
Years in exile sharpened his understanding of labour relations and exploitation, knowledge he later brought back to a democratic South Africa in service of Cosatu, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
He shared his life with his wife, Lorna Levy – activist and author of Radical Engagements: A Life in Exile – who predeceased him and whose partnership in struggle shaped his journey.
Back to the Front stands as a powerful personal reckoning and testament to a life devoted to justice.
