Despite ample evidence that Hangwani Morgan Maumela, one of the alleged key role players of Tembisa's largest looting syndicate, has allegedly extended his operations beyond Gauteng and to other provinces, the President's office has informed the DA that there is insufficient evidence presented to expand the SIU investigation to include all the dealings of all identified corrupt individuals and companies with all provincial health departments, not just Gauteng, as requested.

This was stated despite the revelations by News24 investigative journalism that Maumela has attempted to extend his allegedly corrupt operations to North West and is suing the legitimate winner of the tender to provide food to 17 hospitals and clinics.

News24's initial investigations into the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran after she flagged suspicious transactions in a report to her superiors, was, however enough evidence to launch the SIU's initial investigation into the syndicates bleeding Tembisa Hospital and the Gauteng Health Department dry. So why now is it not enough, given the context of the extent of the looting and further investigations?

The DA will write to Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to present the evidence he claimed to have at a media conference on 2 September 2025 to the President and request the expansion of the SIU investigation into the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in order to bring the syndicates eroding public health services to book.

We further call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to put the interests of South Africans first and proclaim the expansion upon receiving Minister Motsoaledi’s letter. The SIU's interim report has shown the extent of the rot in one province. Given that Maumela has already tried his luck in North West, it would not seem too far-fetched that his alleged extensive and sophisticated network have infiltrated other provinces as well.

Public health care is too important to allow the rotting to continue unabated.
