Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his “recognition and appreciation” for South Africa's involvement in advancing a peace process between Russia and Ukraine, according to the Presidency.
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday held a telephone discussion with Putin, following his request to brief Ramaphosa on the peace process with Ukraine and to engage on issues of mutual bilateral interest.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
The Presidency said that Ramaphosa welcomed Putin’s update and gave South Africa's support for peace initiatives to end the war and for lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The two leaders agreed to further discussions on the strategic relationship between Russia and South Africa.
In April, both the Presidents, during a telephone discussion, affirmed strong bilateral relations, as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continued.
