The Public Servants Association (PSA), representing employees in the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS), extends appreciation to Judge Edwin Cameron as he retires from his role as Inspecting Judge.

Judge Cameron has since his appointment in 2019 served as a beacon of integrity and an unwavering defender of human rights in South Africa’s correctional system. His tenure marked a period of significant transformation for the JICS, characterised by strengthened oversight, enhanced transparency, and steadfast advocacy for the constitutional rights of inmates. Judge Cameron’s leadership further saw the championing of critical reforms, including the drive for increased independence for the JICS and improvements in its reporting mechanisms. He consistently drew national attention to the need for humane conditions in correctional facilities, reinforcing justice and accountability in the Department of Correctional Services.

The PSA acknowledges Judge Cameron’s resolute commitment to fairness, dignity, and ethical governance principles, aligning with the Union’s mandate to protect workers’ rights and promote sound public administration. His legacy will continue to shape efforts towards a more just and humane correctional environment.

The PSA expresses sincere gratitude for Judge Cameron’s courage, vision, and dedication to reform, which have left an indelible mark on South Africa’s judicial and correctional landscape. The PSA wishes Judge Cameron a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement.
