The Public Servants Association (PSA) has called for urgent intervention by Eastern Cape Health MEC in the ongoing crisis at Rosedale Clinic in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape, which has been shut down by community protests since 2 June 2025.
The shutdown stems from longstanding grievances regarding chronic staff shortages, inadequate service delivery, and unfulfilled promises to upgrade the facility to a Community Health Centre. Despite repeated assurances by the departmental management since 2023, community concerns have gone unaddressed, prompting residents to escalate their protest by closing the Clinic and demanding direct engagement by the MEC.
In a community meeting convened by the Ward Councillor and Clinic committee, it was resolved that the Clinic will remain closed until the MEC addresses the community's concerns. Residents have also indicated their readiness to extend the shutdown to other clinics in Uitenhage to intensify pressure on the Department of Health.
The current situation is disrupting essential healthcare services and places undue strain on healthcare workers. The PSA is committed to ensuring that the Union’s members are well-represented in ongoing discussions and that their safety is prioritised. The PSA urges the MEC of the Eastern Cape Department of Health to take immediate action to resolve the issues at Rosedale Clinic and to engage constructively with the community and healthcare workers to restore services and trust.
