The Public Servants Association (PSA) is concerned about recent developments indicating the potential collapse of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

The NLC board and top management have proven to be unable to efficiently run the organisation. This situation poses significant risks to the integrity and functionality of the NLC, which plays a crucial role in funding and supporting various community and charitable initiatives across South Africa. The NLC has been instrumental in providing financial support to numerous community projects, non-profit organisations, and charitable causes. Its potential collapse threatens the continuity of these vital programs on which many communities rely for development and support.

The PSA is further concerned about the job security of the Union’s members as a collapse of the NLC will affect their employment and wellbeing. Despite the dire situation at the NLC, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition has ignored the PSA’s repeated calls for the Ministry’s intervention. It is imperative to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the impending collapse and to implement corrective measures to restore stability and trust in the NLC. The PSA has highlighted several factors.

These include poor governance, appointment of questionable persons and consultants who serve as enablers to corruption, and inadequate oversight by the Department and the Portfolio Committee. There is a need to ensure accountability and transparency in the NLC’s operations, including the appointment of service providers.

The PSA urges government to ensure that all stakeholders are held accountable for any mismanagement or misconduct that may have contributed to the current crisis at the NLC. The PSA is committed to protecting public interests and ensuring that the funds allocated to the NLC are used effectively and responsibly.

The PSA is ready to support efforts aimed at stabilising the NLC and ensuring its continued operation for the benefit of all South Africans. The PSA calls on all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a sustainable solution that safeguards the interests of communities served by the NLC.
