Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi's government has failed to create a conducive environment to attract investors and grow the local economy. This is evident through an increase in the unemployment rate to 34.7% from 34.4% in the previous quarter.

According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) released today for the first quarter of 2025, there are currently 2.7 million unemployed residents in Gauteng, an increase of 41,000 from the previous quarter. Furthermore, there are 579 000 discouraged job seekers in the province.

This indicates that Premier Lesufi's game-changing economic strategies and quick fix Nansi Ispani programme have failed to bring the desired change. Potential investors are being discouraged by crime, unreliable infrastructure, and access to basic services such as water and electricity. Why not begin by addressing these pressing issues, establishing proper policing, and tackling corruption at the core of the infrastructure crisis?

The DA-led Gauteng government plans to grow the economy and create sustainable jobs. We will take strong action against corruption by making all forensic investigations public and fully implementing their recommendations. Whistleblowers will be protected. Furthermore, the DA Gauteng will reduce crime and improve service delivery. Only then confidence among investors will be strengthened, ultimately leading to more job opportunities that will end the misery for job seekers.

Gauteng residents are tired of empty promises; they demand sustainable jobs that will emancipate them from poverty.
