Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to attend the Brics summit next month in Brazil, marking his first meeting with the bloc since the Southeast Asian nation became a member this year, according to officials familiar with the matter.
The former general is expected to participate in the July 6–7 meeting, four officials said on condition of anonymity because the trip has not been publicly announced. Brazil is organising a state visit for Prabowo after the summit, three of the officials said.
Hasan Nasbi, chief of the Presidential Communication Office, declined to comment on the matter. Brazil’s presidency said all Brics members were invited to the summit in Rio, without providing details about the agenda of specific leaders.
Indonesia formally joined Brics in January, a step seen as strengthening the Global South amid growing concerns over trade protectionism, especially as President Donald Trump moves to reshape the global trade order by threatening higher tariffs on dozens of countries.
Founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China, and later joined by South Africa, Brics has positioned itself as a counterweight to Western-led institutions. The group recently expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, taking its total membership to 10 nations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend virtually due to an international arrest warrant against him, Russian state media Tass has reported, citing a Kremlin aide. Separately, China has informed Brazil that President Xi Jinping will skip the summit — the first time he will miss the event since taking office. Premier Li Qiang will represent China instead, according to a Brazilian official.
