The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape welcomes the significant strides made by the Provincial Department of Infrastructure in delivering 2 188 affordable housing opportunities across the province in the 2024/25 financial year.
This delivery, achieved through the Social Housing Programme and the First Home Finance (FHF) subsidy, reflects the Western Cape’s commitment to expanding access to secure, well-located housing, offering rental options for households earning between R1 850 and R22 000 per month, and assisting first-time buyers to purchase homes in both the private and public markets.
Demand remains high, as was confirmed in a recent reply to a written Parliamentary question. For example, Conradie Park offered 415 units but received more than 2 000 applications, while Maitland Mews offered 204 units with over 1 500 applications. To address this need, the Provincial Government is accelerating delivery through the Mayoral Land Release Programme in the City of Cape Town.
A strong pipeline of projects is underway in Drakenstein, Breede Valley, Stellenbosch, George, and the Garden Route District. These are supported by the Municipal Social Housing Support Programme, in partnership with the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), which provides municipalities with technical assistance and a project-based approach to fast-track delivery.
Dirk Wessels, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Infrastructure, said, “The delivery of over two thousand housing opportunities in just one year is a clear demonstration of the Western Cape Government’s ability to turn plans into results. By releasing land, supporting municipalities, and ensuring fair allocations, we are not only building homes, we are building hope."
Written questions will be submitted to the Minister, on the progress of new affordable housing projects, as housing remains in high-demand.
Wessels further added, “The DA in the Western Cape looks forward to the Standing Committee on Infrastructure conducting an oversight visit to an affordable housing project, to assess progress; verify quality standards; ensure fair allocation processes and engage directly with residents.”
The DA in the Western Cape remains committed to expanding access to dignified, affordable housing while leading the country in service delivery efficiency.
