The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) welcomes the 2019 election results. We would like to extend our congratulations to all South Africans who exercised their democratic right to vote in what proved to be one of the most highly contested elections in the history of our democracy.

The challenges facing the ruling party are mammoth and issues such as the findings of the State Capture Commission, the e-tolls debacle, and the problematic AARTO amendment Bill that recently passed through Parliament, will have to be addressed.

This is also an opportunity for President Cyril Ramaphosa to fulfil the promises he made to the electorate and to clean up key institutions of state.

We have already seen some corrective measures with sacking of former SARS boss Tom Moyane, as well as advocates Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The appointment of a new head of the NPA has also been a step in the right direction for our country in terms of maintaining the independence of key institutions.  Furthermore, the promises made in the 2019 State of the Nation Address, such as the establishment an Ethics, Integrity and Disciplinary Technical Assistance Unit and the introduction of mandatory courses for senior government managers in areas such ant-corruption, could help to begin restoring faith in government institutions.

As OUTA, we will continue to engage government and hold our leaders to account.

“The responsible use of tax revenue at all levels of government is imperative if we are to move forward as a democracy and reap the rewards for all of our citizens under the elected leadership,” says OUTA’s CEO, Wayne Duvenage.
