The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West will submit written questions to the MEC for the Department of Health, Madoda Sambatha, to ascertain the number of business owners and managers of government institutions in the province that have been charged for non-compliance to Covid-19 regulations.
This follows the MECs recent decision to close the Wolmaransstad Post Office and Home Affairs Office for failing to ensure the wearing of masks, social distancing and sanitising.
The DA agrees that non-compliance to Covid-19 regulations is unacceptable and should be dealt with, but we are also of the view that those in positions of authority at these institutions should be held responsible.
If there are no consequences for the non-compliant managers of these institutions, members of the public suffering the closure, will be the only goal achieved.
Failure to comply with Covid-19 regulations is an offence in terms of the Disaster Management Act and a mere slap on the wrist will simply not communicate a stern message to offenders.
The MEC should intensify oversight visits to inspect the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on site and see to it that sufficient space is allocated to ensure social distancing.
