The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) National Women's Structure expresses profound outrage and deep concern regarding the alleged rape of a 7-year-old girl, referred to as Cwecwe, at Bergview College in Matatiele. The young girl was reportedly assaulted on school premises while awaiting transport home.
The NUM Women's Structure condemns the alleged inaction and lack of support from the school principal for the victim, who had reportedly refused to facilitate DNA testing instead offered the family a transfer letter, prioritizing the school’s reputation over the child’s well-being. This is unacceptable behavior and demonstrates a severe disregard for the victim's rights and safety.
Worst of all this deepens the crisis faced by women in our country, such as physical abuse and murders of women and children.
"We are appalled by the alleged actions of the school principal," stated, Nthabiseng Mashiteng, NUM Women’s Structure National Secretary. Protecting the reputation of an institution should never supersede the urgent need to ensure justice for a child who has suffered such a trauma. We demand immediate and decisive action."
The NUM National Women's Structure calls upon the Eastern Cape Department of Education to:
- Implement stringent measures to ensure the safety and security of all learners in schools across the province.
- Conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the alleged incident.
- Immediately expel the school principal from Bergview College.
Furthermore, the NUM Women's Structure implores the Department of Justice to:
- Issue a warrant of arrest for the individual implicated in the alleged rape.
- Demand that the individual provide DNA samples for testing.
- Ensure swift and decisive legal action to hold the perpetrator accountable.
The NUM Women's Structure stands firmly against child abuse and gender-based violence. We will continue to advocate for the protection and rights of all children and will not be silent on Cwecwe.
The women's structure unequivocally applauds the mother's bravery in utilizing social media to seek justice for her daughter. We urge the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice prevails.
Issued by NUM National Women Structure Secretary Nthabiseng Mashiteng
