The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) will host a workshop with municipalities on the tariff application process for the 2026/27 financial year from 09:00 to 13:00 on December 5.
The workshop will be conducted on Microsoft Teams, and will also be live-streamed on Nersa’s accounts on social media platforms X and Facebook.
To comply with Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) regulations, municipalities are required to submit their electricity tariffs to Nersa on or before March 15 each year for approval, to enable implementation by July 1 of the same year.
On November 13, Nersa issued a formal notice to all licensed municipalities and private electricity distributors to submit their electricity tariff applications for the 2026/27 financial year by December 12.
However, following engagements with sector stakeholders and in consideration of the practical challenges raised, the regulator has extended the submission deadline to January 13.
This extension is granted to allow distributors additional time to finalise their applications while still enabling Nersa to issue tariff decisions within the MFMA prescribed timelines, the regulator says.
