The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] expresses calls on workers to join and support the socio-economic national strike of our federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions [COSATU] on Wednesday, 24th August 2022.
This socio-economic strike is aimed at sending a clear message to government and employers about the imperative action needed to change the prevailing economy situation which has worsened the livelihoods of workers and the poor.
The economic crisis has had a devastating impact on workers and the broader working-class fostering extreme inequality, poverty and unemployment with the working-class bearing the brunt of the crisis. The economic situation will remain gloomy for the foreseeable future unless the government and employers provide tangible solutions and quickly address the situation.
In this regard, the government should do away with implementing neoliberal macroeconomic policies which have led to inequalities, poverty, job losses, austerity, privatisation, and destroyed the capacity of the state to deliver on education, health, housing, policing and social care.
As NEHAWU, we fully support the socio-economic national strike and call on all our members and workers in general to join and participate in this socio-economic strike by our federation.
Lastly, this strike is a protected strike, meaning workers will not victimised for taking part in the strike and as such we call upon employers not to victimise workers for participating in the strike.
