The applicant describes itself as a campaigner for a more inclusive, transparent and accountable political and electoral system in South Africa, which has as its objective increased accountability, transparency and inclusiveness of elections and politics in South Africa. The applicant avers that it strives to achieve its objective by inter alia campaigning for reform of the political party funding system in South Africa through the introduction of legislation and other measures.

In 2017 the applicant successfully challenged the constitutionality of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, Act 2 of 2000 ('PAIA") to the extent that it failed to provide for access to information on the private funding of political parties. This failure rendered PAIA inconsistent with the constitutional right to access
information, the state's obligation to protect, promote and fulfil the rights in the Bill of Rights, the citizen's political rights.
