The Minister of Transport, Mr Fikile Mbalula, commended the South African Maritime Safety Authority for their swift response in containing the oil spill and activating necessary protocols following an oil spill at Algoa Bay.
“Protecting marine life and the environment are an integral part of our responsibility in relation to the vast parts of the ocean we are responsible for. If we are to reap the immeasurable benefits of the oceans economy, we have to ensure that those who use the ocean play their part in protecting it and preserving marine life,” said Minister Mbalula.
The Minister is encouraged that SAMSA is working with the affected vessel owners, relevant authorities and other stakeholders to contain the spill and ensure that damage to the environment and marine and bird life is minimised.
