The Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwana, extends his congratulations to three newly appointed Deputy Directors-General (DDGs) in the Department of National Treasury: Ms Ulrike Britton, Ms Ogalaletseng Gaarekwe, and Mr Christopher Axelson. The appointments were officially announced by Cabinet on Thursday, 29 May 2025.

Ms Britton has been appointed as Deputy Director-General for Public Finance, Ms Gaarekwe as Deputy Director-General for Intergovernmental Relations (IGR), and Mr Axelson as Deputy Director-General for Tax and Financial Sector Policy.

These strategic appointments represent a significant milestone in the Department's commitment to maintaining institutional stability while fostering innovation and fresh perspectives.

"It is essential that the Department demonstrates strong leadership and stability while continuing to develop a pipeline of talented and dedicated public service professionals committed to serving our nation," Minister Godongwana said.

"These appointments reflect our ongoing investment in building capacity and ensuring continuity in our critical work."

About the Appointees:
Ms Ulrike Britton has served the National Treasury since 2006, beginning her tenure as Senior Budget Analyst for Housing in Public Finance. Throughout her career at Treasury, she has held various progressive roles, most recently serving as Acting Head of Policy Coordination in the Office of the Director-General.

Ms Ogalaletseng Gaarekwe joined the Department in 2009 from the Free State Provincial Treasury, where she started as a budget analyst in the Intergovernmental Relations directorate. She has been serving as Acting Deputy Director-General of IGR and now assumes the role permanently.

Mr Christopher Axelson brought private banking sector experience when he joined Treasury in 2012 as Director of Personal Income Tax and Savings. He was promoted to Chief Director of Economic Tax Analysis in 2018 and has been serving as Acting Deputy Director-General for Tax and Financial Sector Policy since 2023, a position he now holds officially.
