The DA is appalled by the dilapidated state of the Sun City Police station located within the bustling tourism area of Mogwase, next to the Sun City Resort.

During a Legislature oversight meeting yesterday, we found the police station – reportedly leased at R22 752.90 per month, in an advanced state of dilapidation.

The police station faces a myriad of challenges including:

  • Officers and personnel from different departments squashed in single rooms. See image here;
  • The absence of a dedicated private room to accommodate rape victims to have their statements taken;
  • DNA samples stored in cooler box on the corner of one of the offices. See image here;
  • The docket storage is an old storage container located along a collapsed fence exposing the documents to theft.

Temporary containers given to the station are now infested by termites and on the brink of collapse. The Sun City Police Station serves surrounding communities, resorts, lodges, and hotels. These include hotels and properties located within the Sun City Resort, neighbouring Kingdom Resort, Kwa Maritane and Black Rhino which hosts local and international travellers.

The recent first quarter 2022/23 crime stats shows that crime in the province is on the rise. While the government spends over R54 million on renting dilapidated buildings in the North West. It is imperative to ensure that the men and women in blue are well equipped to prevent and fight crime to keep communities safe.

We have today written to National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola, to urgently intervene within 30 days seeing that his colleague, North West Provincial SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena and Public Works officials, have turned a blind eye to the challenges facing this station.

Issued by Freddy Sonakile MPL - DA North West Spokesperson on Community Safety and Transport Management
