The state of Kroonstad's sewerage infrastructure is a matter of grave concern. The outdated and dilapidated infrastructure is in desperate need of an upgrade, rather than quick fixes. Many neighbourhoods in Kroonstad are plagued with collapsed pipelines that require regular pumping, leading to sewage problems piling up without a solution.

Exacerbating the sewage crisis, is the problems with the Moqhaka Municipality’s ICT system, currently making it impossible to pay contractors. As a result, services are being rendered less effectively. Unfortunately, there is currently no resolution in sight, and no plan in place to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

Businesses are bearing the brunt of exorbitant sewage charges while their clients must navigate through raw sewage to access offices and shops. Meanwhile, residents are forced to witness their pathways and gardens being engulfed by raw sewage, all while paying for a service that fails to deliver. Continuous problems, such as collapsed sewer lines and unaddressed accommodation issues, have been reported for years without any solutions.

The way forward appears bleak with a municipal budget that lacks provisions for tackling these pressing problems. Residents who actively participate in IDP meetings to advocate for sewer line upgrades are being excluded from projects and their concerns are not prioritized. This dire situation not only compromises the quality of life for residents but also infringes upon their right to a clean and healthy environment.

The DA in Moqhaka has already taken action by submitting a formal letter to the council, urging swift action and will continue to closely monitor the situation. Urgent intervention is necessary to address the failing sewerage system and provide residents with the services they deserve.
