The DA in the Kopanong Local Municipality demands that Deputy President Mashatile's visit to Jagersfontein tomorrow becomes more than a mere show of face and a tick-box exercise. It has been 238 days since the Jagersfontein Disaster, and there is still nothing to show from the false promises made by President Ramaphosa and Minister Mantashe who too showed face and completed a tick-box exercise.

Members of the community are still left homeless. Raw sewage is still pouring into the streets due to the failed sewage system, and residents are forced to bring water with wheelbarrows. The DA provided food, clothes, water, and bedding at the time, but the ANC has so far done the absolute minimum to help.

The lack of progress in the area is unacceptable and has had a significant effect on the community, with the trauma of the tragedy still affecting families. One child was admitted to the hospital due to trauma, and two people are still missing. The authorities' lack of action prolongs the residents' suffering and hinders their ability to rebuild their lives.

The municipality has acknowledged that the problem with the sewage system is due to the sludge that went into the pipes and caused blockages. However, no action has been taken to address the issue. The DA has reported it to the Director of workers at Kopanong and will continue to drive this matter until a resolution is reached.

The visit to Jagersfontein serves as a reminder that communities are still suffering from the aftermath of the silt dam tragedy, and more needs to be done to support them. The DA demands a report on the additional plans the Deputy President will have for the disaster-stricken town. We will monitor the situation and follow up in thirty days.
