Corruption Watch (CW) says the long-awaited release of the final part of the State Capture report must kickstart investigations into those people and entities implicated in corruption.

Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture chairperson Chief Justice Raymond Zondo handed over the final part of the report to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday night, before he highlighted key points in his investigation and set out recommendations.

CW says the handover represents a critical step towards a sort of “national reckoning”.

CW executive director Karam Singh said the Zondo Commission, as it's been dubbed, is one of the most significant seen in South Africa.

“It is equally clear that the huge investment of time, money, and energy spent over these past years must not have been in vain, but must clear the way for criminal justice institutions to do their work in securing justice for the many people who have suffered as a result of the grand theft and corruption that we have witnessed,” he said.

CW hopes some of Zondo’s recommendations, such as those involving procurement, are implemented to stop corruption in various government processes and is calling on the relevant authorities to investigate to ensure those guilty are brought to justice.
