The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on the Gauteng Serious Crimes Unit to urgently and thoroughly investigate the shooting of DJ Bongani Mfito, following reports that this case, and the murder of City of Ekurhuleni auditor Mpho Mafole, are allegedly linked to the Executive Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza.

It is alleged that a suspect apprehended in relation to the shooting of Mfito in 2023 was an accomplice in the shooting of City of Ekurhuleni Auditor, Mpho Mafole who was gunned down in June 2025.

Mafole was shot and killed days after he submitted a report detailing irregularities regarding a highly lucrative chemical toilet tender issued by the City.

The DA submitted a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application to obtain a copy of the report submitted by Mafole, yet our efforts to obtain this report have been stone-walled by the Executive Mayor.

These latest revelations, added to the testimonies at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, highlight that the City of Ekurhuleni is an active crime-scene.

The fact that its first citizen is embroiled in numerous scandals should be of concern to everyone who calls Ekurhuleni home.

The DA will not rest until the truth sees the light of day and that there is justice for those who are victims of this gangster city.

We will continue to push for the release of Mafole’s report while keeping a close eye on the investigation into the shooting of Mfito.

Any less would be a disservice to their memories and a slap in the face to law-abiding citizens who expect elected officials to defend, not break the law.

Issued by Cllr. Brandon Pretorius - DA City of Ekurhuleni Caucus Leader
