The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, reaffirms the position that the G20 Summit, held for the first time in Africa from 22 to 23 November and chaired by South Africa, was a resounding success and will go down in the annals of history as such.

It is unfortunate that an important global role player, the USA, chose to absent itself from this epoch-making event.

We commend the collective from Africa, led by the African Union, for using the G20 forum to put Africa’s agenda and its people at the centre of the G20. In the same breadth, we warmly welcome and embrace the full support demonstrated by the 18 member states of the G20 for the African continent.

The ongoing social media posts from the incoming G20 Presidency are rather unfortunate but not unexpected, as multilateralism is not one of President Trump’s most favoured mechanisms of diplomacy. Such social media posts are an unfortunate, isolated element from the generally very successful G20 for humanity.

We look forward to the incoming G20 presidency upholding the practice of inclusivity that characterised the previous event. We firmly reject the misleading narrative about white Afrikaner genocide constantly repeated by President Trump.

The continuous misrepresentation of the truth will never change what objectively obtains in South Africa regarding the land, its historical context, and how the people of South Africa, through constitutionally recognised mechanisms, are resolving this matter. We remain a sovereign state that respects the sovereignty of other member states and expects reciprocity in this regard.
