The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has described as “vile and dangerous” death threats being made against KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, and is calling for an urgent investigation by police and security authorities, citing an attack on democratic governance.

IFP Chief Whip in the KZN legislature and IFP national chairperson Blessed Gwala said the alleged threats constituted a “reckless incitement to violence”.

The party, which is also conducting its own investigation, said it had opened a criminal case.

“…these threats place the life of the Honourable Premier at risk and undermine the rule of law. Heads must roll in this matter. The Premier must receive the highest level of protection from the State,” Gwala stated.

He declared that political violence would not be allowed to take root in KwaZulu-Natal.

Gwala attributed the alleged threats against Ntuli to the alleged embezzling of public funds under the guise of service delivery.

“It is deeply concerning that these threats have emerged at a time when the Honourable Premier is receiving widespread praise across South Africa, following KwaZulu-Natal’s achievement of first place nationally in the matric results. This performance reflects decisive leadership, accountability, and a commitment to excellence in governance, raising serious questions about the motivation behind these threats,” Gwala said.

He said Ntuli’s “firm” stance against corruption and maladministration had made him a target for individuals who fear accountability.

“We firmly believe that the only so-called ‘sin’ of the Honourable Premier is that he is a hardworking leader who delivers results and upholds integrity. Let it be made clear: threats of this nature are not political statements or expressions of opinion. They are criminal acts.

"Any individual who issues or amplifies death threats against an elected leader must know that they will be identified, investigated, and held fully accountable under the law,” he said.
