The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is urging South Africans to take part in the public consultation process around the possible introduction of electronic voting (e-voting) in South Africa.
Consultations are ongoing across all provinces, following a conference in March, in which IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo called on the commission to investigate new approaches to improve the electoral process, voter experience, accessibility and enable cost savings.
The IEC has launched an Electronic Voting Policy Discussion Document, which explores the possibilities, challenges, and implications of implementing e-voting in South Africa.
It is urging citizens to read through the research contained in the document and to share any concerns or suggestions.
The document can be found here for download, and South Africans can email their views, proposals, and concerns to evoting@elections.org.za by no later than the end of September 2025.
“We take the opportunity to emphasise that the Commission has not yet decided on adopting e-voting. The current physical ballot papers will be used in the impending municipal elections, as there is no official national policy and legislative framework on e-voting,” the IEC said.
Comments from the consultation process will be added to the discussion document, which will be used to create a green paper and sent to the Minister of Home Affairs for the relevant constitutional processes.
