Gauteng residents are being abandoned by a failing government and have to must fend for themselves. The patching of potholes by private individuals or companies and the direction of traffic by street vendors are but a few examples that impact roads and traffic.
In December last year, a bridge collapsed due to flooding on Hendrik Potgieter Road in Roodepoort. Since Hendrik Potgieter is a provincial road, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) was tasked with employing contractors to do the reconstruction. The latest estimates indicate that the reconstruction should be complete by the end of November.
As a result, there had been a significant impact on traffic patterns in the area, congestion, reduced mobility and rat-running by trucks through the suburban streets. In addition, there has been damage to roads, curbs and water meters, as well as a negative impact on business. This has been traumatic for residents who live in the area.
Despite an undertaking by authorities that large trucks would only be able to use certain roads as a detour, these trucks have ignored the traffic signs and, to minimise their travel time, have used municipal roads that are not geared to carry such heavy vehicles.
An appeal for assistance to various entities to police the traffic chaos, repair the damage to infrastructure, and speed up the repair of the bridge has been met with shrugs, finger-pointing, and the usual excuse of a lack of resources.
Gauteng residents are questioning why they pay rates and taxes if there are never enough resources to provide services.
The current Gauteng government has let its residents down. The 2024 election is the time to deal with this uncaring and incompetent government via the ballot box and replace it with a capable DA government that cares and can be trusted.
