The MMC for Community and Social Development Services, Cllr Palesa Modise, joined key stakeholders in a formal handover ceremony marking the transfer of property certificates from the national Department of Public Works and Infrastructure to the Gauteng Department of Social Development.
These properties are earmarked for conversion into shelters for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), reinforcing the government’s united stance against the scourge of GBV in South Africa.
This important event signifies a critical step in the broader government strategy to expand the availability of safe spaces for individuals and families affected by GBV.
The MMC commended the initiative, highlighting the significance of intergovernmental collaboration in addressing urgent social challenges. The handover forms part of the National Strategic Plan on GBV and Femicide, which emphasises the importance of accessible and sustainable support systems for survivors.
The MMC was joined by the Minister of Public Works, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, senior officials from the Department of Women, Youth and Person with Disabilities, civil society representatives and community leaders in acknowledging this historic occasion.
The properties being transferred will be upgraded and repurposed to provide safe accommodation, psychosocial support, legal assistance and other critical services to victims and survivors of abuse.
“The handover of these properties represents more than the exchange of documentation – it represents hope, dignity and safety for many who have suffered in silence. By converting these spaces into GBV shelters, we are ensuring that victims have access to comprehensive care and support in a secure and nurturing environment,” said the MMC during the ceremony.
The MMC further reiterated the City’s commitment to fighting GBV through a multifaceted approach that includes prevention, support and empowerment.
This handover is a testament to what can be achieved when different spheres of government unite with a shared purpose. It reflects a commitment to building safer communities and ensuring that no survivor is left without support.
“We encourage community members to become active partners in this journey. Together, we can end the cycle of violence and create an environment where everyone, especially women and children, can live without fear,” concluded the MMC.
