In early 2024, commissioned by and working in collaboration with the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) embarked on a rigorous scenario-planning exercise to develop the Finding Our Rhythm: Gauteng Scenarios 2035.

The primary objective of this project was to deepen understanding of potential futures for the Gauteng City-Region and to chart pathways towards positive developmental outcomes. Specifically, the project sought to adapt and refine the national Indlulamithi Scenarios 2035 to the distinctive context of the Gauteng City-Region. In doing so, it aimed to provide valuable insights for the 7th Administration of the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) as it planned for the 2024–2029 term and beyond. As the process evolved, the work was deliberately aligned with the emerging framework of GPG’s Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP), thereby enhancing its relevance and impact.
