The DA in eThekwini has written to the head of water, demanding an update on the process of replacing dilapidated water infrastructure in various wards across the city, as well as remedies to existing faults that have not been addressed.

Residents have expressed their dismay with the number of long-standing water leaks. Hundreds of thousands of litres of water are still flowing down streets in communities across the city as a result of large water main bursts, which have caused water outages and damage to private property and municipal infrastructure.

Municipal officials have given little to no information on the constant water cuts.

Water losses in the city are at an alarming rate of more than 50%. Despite the head of water's denial, it is apparent that these unresolved water leaks and bursts contribute largely to water losses.

Contractors working on these burst pipes are seemingly not quality controlled as many of these leaks reoccur within a short period of time.

The head of water, Ednick Msweli, needs to intervene and ensure ratepayers receive timely services when attending to water leaks, bursts, and outages.

Residents are fed up and are threatening to withhold rates due to poor services, a situation that the municipality cannot afford.

Issued by Councillor Shontel De Boer - DA eThekwini Whip - MPAC
