The collapse of yesterday’s scheduled eThekwini full council meeting at the Durban Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC ), caused by a power failure due to damage on the electricity cables, is unacceptable.

The Speaker of the Council, Councillor Thabani Nyawose, informed councillors that the repairs will take too long, leading to the adjournment of the meeting. This incident is yet another glaring example of how the ongoing service delivery failures in eThekwini are severely impacting the municipality's ability to govern effectively.

The collapse is a direct result of the ANC/EFF/IFP coalition failure to provide even the most basic services. The inability to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply is symbolic of the broader infrastructure failures we face in eThekwini. From regular power outages to water shortages and inconsistent waste management, our city is grappling with a lack of leadership and accountability.

The DA is deeply disappointed with the state of eThekwini and will not remain silent while the ANC/EFF/IFP coalition continues to mismanage our city. The city manager, Mr. Musa Mbhele, must be held accountable for the ongoing failures. His leadership has proven to be inadequate, and it is clear that he is unable to manage the affairs of this municipality effectively.

This failure of service delivery is not just a disruption to council business, but it directly impacts the lives of the people who live and work in this city. It is unacceptable that our residents continue to endure these persistent failures, while those in positions of power refuse to take responsibility.

The DA will continue to fight for the removal of Mr. Musa Mbhele and will hold the ANC-led coalition accountable for their mismanagement. The people of eThekwini deserve a government that works for them, not one that allows such failures to continue unchecked.
