Zimbabwe’s healthcare system faces significant challenges due to unreliable energy access, with 32.5% of its 1 848 healthcare facilities lacking consistent electricity. This report explores the transformative potential of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) systems in addressing these gaps, ensuring uninterrupted health services, particularly in remote and underserved areas. It highlights how frequent power outages and solar system malfunctions disrupt critical services such as emergency care, vaccine storage and maternal health support, emphasising the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions to improve healthcare delivery and population well-being.

The report provides a comprehensive roadmap for powering Zimbabwe’s healthcare facilities with reliable and sustainable energy. It outlines tailored technical designs for solar energy systems to meet the needs of various facility types, from rural clinics to district hospitals, while estimating investment requirements of up to USD 15.4-million for full electrification. Key recommendations include establishing an inter-ministerial committee to oversee implementation, setting up a technical program unit for quality control, and conducting independent audits of existing energy systems. By integrating DRE solutions, Zimbabwe can enhance healthcare resilience, reduce operational disruptions, and ensure long-term sustainability through robust operations and maintenance frameworks.

The report also emphasises the importance of financing mechanisms, such as leveraging health facility maintenance funds and collaborating with the Rural Electrification Fund, to ensure scalable and sustainable outcomes. By adopting this integrated approach, Zimbabwe can bridge critical gaps in energy access and healthcare delivery, ultimately improving health outcomes for millions.
