Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) national spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys appeared briefly in the Edenvale Magistrate's Court on charges of common assault after allegedly manhandling a fellow party member during an EFF event.

According to a police statement seen by News24, Mathys is alleged to have assaulted fellow EFF member Busisiwe Seabe two weeks ago at Gillooly's Farm in Bedfordview, where they held a youth registration event.

"The complainant stated she was at the Gillooly's Farm entrance, having the tag for access to artists, when Leigh-Ann Mathys requested the artist tag from her and when she refused, Leigh-Ann grabbed the tag from the complainant's neck, and the complainant fell," reads the statement.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi was in court along with a handful of party members to support Mathys.

Prosecutor Neville Smith asked the court to postpone the matter to allow the State to conclude its investigations, which include securing a medical report and witness statements.

Mathys was arrested on Friday and was released on a warning.

The case has been postponed to 26 January to allow the State to complete its investigations.
