The Democratic Alliance (DA) expresses heartfelt condolences following the devastating floods that have struck parts of the Eastern Cape, resulting in the loss of at least 49 lives, including nine individuals from a single village.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and communities affected by this disaster. Our thoughts are with all those mourning the loss of loved ones and those still searching for the missing.

The growing frequency and intensity of flooding in the Eastern Cape, coupled with limited infrastructure and poor disaster readiness, is highly concerning. Many of the affected areas remain vulnerable due to weak infrastructure, poor drainage, and limited emergency capacity. In the face of such devastation, we must ensure that the response is swift, coordinated, and comprehensive.

We commend the swift intervention of Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, who has travelled to the province in response to the tragic incident involving a scholar transport vehicle swept away by floodwaters in Mthatha. Her presence offers reassurance, and we support her efforts to ensure that affected learners, educators, and families receive the urgent support they need.

DA public representatives and activists have also mobilised across the province to assess the damage, offer support to the affected communities, and assist with relief efforts. We will continue to work closely with local authorities and disaster management services to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.

Provincial government must prioritise relief efforts and ensure that no community is left behind. Urgent humanitarian aid, shelter, and infrastructure repair must be delivered without delay. We further urge the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to provide a full report on the province’s disaster preparedness and response measures.

The DA will continue to advocate for both immediate assistance and long-term infrastructure investment to enhance resilience against extreme weather events.

We stand with the people of the Eastern Cape in this difficult time.

Issued by Dr Vicky Knoetze MPL - DA Leader of the Official Opposition in the Eastern Cape Legislature
